This photo, taken by photographer Daniele Pardi on May 8, 2025, captures a moment in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, when two strangers — one from the United States and the other from Ireland — stopped in front of my "Hope for Peace" sign. They were provoked by its message and started a dialogue about global conflicts. Both of them had opposing views on the events in the world, but instead of becoming divided, they chose to discuss their differences.

Nuevo Papa, nueva paz Yona Tukuser es una pintora que nació en un pequeño pueblo de Bulgaria y creció entre los vientos del Este. Desde hace años vive en Ucrania, y desde septiembre está en Roma, comisariando una exposición sobre la hambruna que marcó a la antigua Unión Soviética tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Unmoved by the crowds, the chanting and the selfies, one woman stands stock still holding a sign: “Hope for Peace.” This is Ukrainian artist Yona Tukuser, 39, who said she has stood here 12 hours a day, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., since April 25 — four days after Pope Francis died.

Yona Tukuser é uma pintora nascida numa pequena aldeia na Bulgária e criada entre os ventos do Leste. Vive na Ucrânia há anos e, desde setembro, está em Roma, curadora de uma exposição sobre a fome que marcou a antiga União Soviética no pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial.
